I just reinstalled it on a fairly free Intrepid install (I didn't know
it wasn't installed by default now), and after the first CD I ripped it
crashed with the same error. I'll try to get another valgrind log. Is
there anything else I can get?

I'm in the process of getting another valgrind, but it says it'll take
740hours and increasing hours to finish ripping the CD. I'm also getting
a lot of the following errors on the console:
scsi_read error: sector=43790 length=1 retry=8
Sense key: 0 ASC: 0 ASCQ: 2
I'm not sure how much has changed in the past week, but I decided to
remove that sleep 15 last night, and this morning it booted just fine.
So, I guess it's been "fixed" somewhere, though I'm betting it'll crop
up again in the future. Thanks for your help again.

Well, still happened this morning, at least it didn't freeze this time,
which it appears to do from time to time when asking me to press CTRL+D.
I'm not sure when /dev/sdc[12] is coming from, I have nothing other than
my USB HDD and my internal HDD attached.

I setup the "Encrypted private directory" via ecryptfs and mounted it.
In Nautilus's places I see it mounted there, but when I try to unmount
it via that menu I get an error about it not being in fstab, and not
being root.

It looks like the ubuntu diff missed something that's causing this. The
original package is fine. After a little look into the code, I found
that these errors are caused by "sizelimit" not being initialised (line
lomount.c:882) like it is in the original package.
This is in the ubuntu diff: (lines
Changing to confirmed as is reproducible, and fix has been suggested.
