I experienced such problems for months now, both on a AMD Athlon with
nv5200(running proprietary drivers) and on a laptop with a centrino and
a radeon 9600M(os drivers).
It used to happen under whatever kind of load (and to shot it down: I
don't run compiz).

I forgot to say that if I apt-get --purge remove powernowd the machine still
freezes at reboot :)
re-installing powernowd and stopping it at every login keeps the machine
running good 100%.

I always get an "Unhandled error" message when burning a dvd in Gusty
with any of nautilus, k3b, gnomebaker, brasero...
I was able to burn successfully all supported media when older ubuntu
releases.
I still can burn without any problem (but the command line thing :) ) any type

I wanted to burn an .iso image[4GB] but it returned an "unhandled error" at 60%
of operation and with all programs [gnome-burner / k3b / brasero ].

It happened many more times since...
I booted my desktop in recovery mode ( kernel 2.6.20-16-generic ) and it
freezed during "disk mounted 29 times without check..." at 79% or
something.
I've runned memtest today but everything was fine.
Isn't it a kernel bug?
Now I'm booting kernel 2.6.20-15-g
The issue remains on Feisty-2.60.20-15-generic.
As the choice was to have a non-stable os or a non-stable os... I just
went for gusty and in my case I found that noapic nolapic parameters for
kernel boot seem to solve the problem on 2.6.22-7-generic

and everything seems ok but if i try to put change selections i hear the login
sound...
I disabled the system-sound checkbox now...
In the morning I updated ubuntu... may it be possible that some of the
