By accident, I upgraded some parts to 390, so I just gave up and tried
to upgrade *all* the packages to 390, instead of having some from
graphics-drivers and some from partner. Lo and behold, I think I'm on
partner-provided drivers now, because everything works on 390.48 and I
have multiple indepen
Please note that this happened after an update from a fresh install
*and* of a two-days-old install; I'm using the Kubuntu daily installer
from Feb 25th.

I managed to fix my setup by using the Graphics Drivers PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa) and
forcing the install of version 390.25-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1 (apt-get
install nvidia-390=390.25-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1 or something). I suspect
version 390.25-0ubuntu1 is broken.
