it seems that the library /usr/lib/libx264.a used to be included in the
x264 package, and the libx264-dev package misses the appropriate
'Replaces' line. However it is no longer necessary, it seems. I wonder
why you claim ubuntu
ffmpeg is necessary anyway to build against the new x264.

libx264-dev.
I'd suggest to upload the new version from debian-multimeida ASAP and

ffmpeg's configure generates the .pc files. So there is no point in
statically copying updated files in there.

ah,it seems that it worked for the original reporter because he has
perhaps an /etc/default/locale file.
What did work for me is the following command:

since you examined that the problem is caused due to a broken faad
library, the bug should be assigned there. Moreover, would you mind
trying the lastest ffmpeg package from intrepid? You can find backported
packages in the motumedia PPA.

updated ffmpeg packages can be found in intrepid. backports for earlier
versions of ubuntu (down to gutsy) can be found in the motumedia PPA.
I'm sorry that I didn't have the time to do this for the hardy release
in time.

I did have a brief look at the patch. It is very hard to review because
of it length. moreover it entagles quite a lot of different changes
without proper documentation why they have been done.
Please try to reduce your changes to a minimum. I don't really see why
you converted the packages to cdb
Your best bet is to use the updated packages from the motumedia PPA. If
you are interested in working on getting this bugfix into hardy, please
open a bugtask for that and assign it to you. I'll happily review your
patches, but I don't have plans to do this myself.
