I have a ghetto workaround for this:
open:

and comment out the lines:

return false;

clicking on the icon and then sliding the cursor away from it.

I only follow the standard updates as distributed through Update Manager.
Looking back through Synaptic history, I haven't even installed any new
packages (aside from updates) since mid May.
