This bug appeared in 8.10 and is still present in 9.04.

- From a fresh 8.10 / 9.04 installation (first boot)

Yes, but in this case this works because "-" is a physical file. So you end
up with a file named "-" in the folder (and probably in the 'ls -l' output,
too), which could be disturbing
I noticed this week end that my computer (AMD 64x2) was severely
dragging its feet when multi-tasking. The system monitor only shows one
CPU, so I trolled /var/log/messages to see what's happening. This short
segment seems relevant:

Silly me. I had a peek at the grub menu while rebooting (it is usually
hidden), and two versions of the kernel are available : -generic and
-386. I don't know why, previous kernels are all generic. Booting with
generic, both processors wotk fine.

Same problem for me in 14.04 - my (old) laptop just doesn't see my
Fujifilm XP200 anymore.
I'd love to help, upload reports or log files etc., but I just don't quite
understand how.
