It got stranger this time. Now while the "Cache Refresh" window was
hanging the software list with things to update popped (new image
attached). Updated the listed programs and closed it and the Cache
Refresh was still there.

Now that you mention it, I also have other DE installed. But the issue appears
without login into any of them beforehand.
I've noticed that sometimes when I login into other DE -> logout -> and login
again to gnome the apps works normally. Not sure which one I have a
The issue persist after changing it with tweak. I'm using Shift + Alt
for years. But after language switch it always takes 1-2 seconds. No
screen freezing or anything. Just the language takes time to change. As
mentioned above, very annoying if you have to change languages
frequently.

same goes for totem as well.
Double clicking on video/audio files shows totem loading for a few
seconds and closing without error.
When I open totem from MATE Terminal and simply drop the video in its
window, works fine.

I personally haven't logged multiple times. Also this is reproducible
immediately after login. Is there a way to check if some program is
doing this?
Also I think its worth mentioning that I changed my password (in attempt
to prevent this) and it continued to do it.

I've tested the latest kernel at the time from folder "v4.3-wily" and this is
the exact file I used
"linux-image-4.3.0-040300-generic_4.3.0-040300.201511020949_amd64.deb".
Unfortunately it continues to freeze. I've also monitored closely the
cpu and memory usage util it freezed
I just want to notify the bug did not occur in the last 3-4 days. The things
I've done are:
1. keep updating ubuntu
2. physically cleared my video card.
I will continue to monitor and if the system don't freeze for 2-3 more
days will mark the bug as "Fix Released".

A little correction:
Turning on "Duplicate Front" does not get the other channels working - it just
seems to remap the speakers.
In reality, it is always the front two speakers that are working (whether they
are called front or rear).
The rear side speakers make no sound at all.

2.6.22-14 has rendered my PC unbootable too. This is true for both
i386, and AMD64 flavors of the kernel.
The problem appears when it tries to load the ide drivers for the disks I have.
Modprobe exists abnormally,
and there's no ide support, so can't be booted. The kernel dumps to busybox.

I've experienced the same issue even when the check is against my home folder.
Just noticed that using 'sudo' resolves the problem on my machine.

All was working OK until I installed nvidia cuda drivers.
Afterwards on lid open the system crashes.
On lid close it exhausted the battery too fast.
Now I have them deleted and have reverted to nouveau drivers but the
problem persists.
