This is possibly because update-grub does not recognize the pc-bsd
partition. I just installed PS-BSD on /dev/sda3 of a system which has
Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows XP on it. Previously I had installed both
FreeBSD and NetBSD installed in the same partition (slice ad0as3 in BSD

most recently xubuntu 11.10 and now the corresponding version of Linux

Apparently this problem is already known:

Since I'm able to boot to a shell, what I just did was to add nomodeset
to /etc/default/grub and run update-grub, as described on the
ubuntuforums page above. So now the altered line in /etc/default/grub
lo
#11 is a good workaround, but not really a fix to the nouveau driver
bug.

I downloaded the 16 July 2011 build of 10.04.3, and apparently the
repaired driver has not been backported to this release.
Two issues:
1. the screen comes up in 1600x1200 or something like that, so the
bottom right of that screen image does not show on the 1024x768 panel,
as before.
2. A login
This also fails with a 10.04.3 LTS RC build from 16 July 2011. After
several minutes, with fairly frequent disk activity, disk activity
ceases with a blank screen. The system does have 11.04 installed now.
(The 10.04.3 RC DVD does boot and seems to run well in some other Dell,
gBox, and Shuttle
Reopen for possible backporting of 11.04 version of this driver to
10.04.3
