This was solved by installing the PulseAudio Device Chooser and Volume Control. Ubuntu has changed to using the PulseAudio sound utilities. I did an upgrade install from Ubuntu 9.04 on this system - the installer installed some PulseAudio components, but not those. I'm not sure if a fresh install

I just rebuilt the openchrome driver on this system, without any patches, and there is no change - the x-origin of the screen coordinates is in the middle of the screen (for 1024x769) and at different horizontal positions for other resolutions. So I think it's likely this is elsewhere in xorg. --

No, adding that option to xorg.conf does not help. The screen x-origin is still shifted over (always in the center for the login screen, in varying positions for different X screen modes). Also switching to a ttyN console still results in a blank screen. There's another really strange effect that

Checking out the driver sources (rev. 890 now) and rebuilding makes resolution detection work still, but switching to text screens does not work. Reinstalling the openchrome driver from the repository makes text screens work, but the resolution fix isn't in that driver, so xorg.conf is necessary.
