I have same problem with nouveau driver on my 8600GT, it should be able
to play videos, but nothing :( With binary NVIDIA driver, everything
working.

You can try this guide, install 2D drivers from ppa and folow 3D guide

then, compile and install(same way as nouveau_dri.so) libtxc_dxtn

For me 8600GT it is working :)

I had same problem on ThinkPad 13 with Kubuntu 16.04.
Adding dis_ucode_ldr as a kernel boot parameter solved the problem.
