I can confirm this problem.
I could solve it with the help of
http://userbase.kde.org/Akonadi#Common_Problems. I think the problem is
related to AppArmor. To solve it I typed:
sudo aa-complain mysqld-akonadi
sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor reload
After this I could start akonadi using System Settings
Same Problem here with a fresh installed Kubuntu 7.10.
System is a Acer TravelMate C300 (TabletPC).
The updater reports a problem that libportaudio0 is no longer supported by
canonical and should be removed after the update.

After running the command:
convmv -f iso-8859-1 -t utf8 -r --nfc --notest *
inside my collection directory, amarok doesn't seem to crash anymore,
