Using PCL viewer I am able to view the A3 testpage. I do not have the
printer with me. I used the hpcups ppd. Have you tried printing using
hpcups PPD.

The one that starts with usb:// uses the cups usb backend. And the one
that starts with hp:/usb/ uses the HPLIP hp backend. Looks like there is
some issue with bi-directional communication in hp backend. Anyway it is
good to know that you are able to print using cups backend.
