I have the exact same problem with my T42. Ran xev and it captures an
event for brightness down but nothing for up.

without xgl with no problems. I recently went back to xorg radeon
drivers and uninstalled xgl and havent experienced the problem since.

en setting up dual screens I tried to use
aticonfig to get things started, but I couldn't figure it out so I
modified my xorg.conf manually. maybe aticonfig is the culprit? Will
attach xorg.conf if requested. Will post back if problem recurs without
second screen attached.
