I think I got the solution. It has something to do with the repository.
I got the error with "...can't be authenticated..." on reinstalling the
ESD packages. So I changed the Repository to the original one and
reinstalled the ESD and Gnome packages. Now everything is fine again.

I had the same Problem years ago. The reason was the connector I was
using. Sadly I can't tell you the difference, don't remember any more.
