I'm using Intrepid Ibex with all the updates and playing video with vlc
still causes ubuntu to freeze and playing it with Totem makes keyboard
and mouse unresponsive -- it is possible though to switch to terminal
(ctrl-alt-f1) and kill the process.

I should probably say that I don't own T60, I have HP nc8430 with ATI
x1600. The thing is that I put the following lines to the "Screen"
section of xorg.conf:
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
Modes have to be those of your system (1440x900). This worked perfect
I'm running Hardy for a while now and I can confirm that my laptop is
still considerably hotter when I'm running Ubuntu than when I'm running
Windows XP. I haven't tested battery life yet though.

My laptop (HP nc8430, Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, ATI x1600) is very hot with
Ubuntu 7.04 installed. If I boot Windows, the CPU temperature is normal
but in Feisty it gets over 80 degrees Celsium and I have frequency
scaling enabled and fans turned on all the time.

Yeah, I also lost battery life - it used to be an hour longer with Edgy
installed.

I had the same problem with the firmware not supporting detected chipset
for D-Link DWA-140 B2 in Natty and I've managed to resolve it by
blacklisting rt2800usb module in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.
