Are you using a self-signed certificate?
Please note that starting from hardy (8.04) openldap is using gnutls
instead of openssl, which is much more strict about certificates. Make
sure that you're *not* using self certificates and that *all* the CA
certificates are available on the client system.

At which debconf priority are you running the test upgrade?
When upgrading from hardy to intrepid the cn=config password (which
corresponds to the rootpw failure seen) is asked by a debconf question
at priority high.

I just tried with my kohjinsha SC3. It is running on poulsbo hardware and X is
crashing with "No screen found" or "Can't load module psb, no drivers found".
I suppose not all harware are supported with the vesa driver.

I don't think a PreDepends is necessary in that case. It may be an issue
with a circular dependency.

Using aptitude instead apt-get leads to a functional tomcat6. Although
tomcat6 fails to configure the first time, aptitude retries once all the
package have been configured.
In the case of smart-pm it handles the installation correctly, though
emitting a warning about a dependency problem:
