The post by FlipsideTech dated 2008-04-29 has a patched version of the
initrd.gz file. Replace this file and persistence should work.

I had created a 1 GB bootable USB Flash Drive containing the LiveCD
version of Kubuntu Dapper in July 2006. Here is a post with the details
of how I did it:

worked perfectly.
When Edgy was released, I repeat
Confirmed. The View menu choices "Show Package List", "Show Last
Download" and "Show Last DPkg Run" are greyed out and non-functional.
The only functional view menu item is "Manage Repositories".
These used to work with Dapper but no longer work with Edgy.

My apologies. I tried reformatting the USB Flash Drive with FAT16
instead of FAT32 and now the USB flash drive boots correctly into the
LiveCD version of Kubuntu. If this should work with a FAT32 filesystem,
then please keep this bug open, otherwise close it.
