after upgrading all the packages from synaptic manager, i restarted my
system, then i found new desktop background so i changed it according
to my need and later found there are no icons on the desktop, i am even
unable to shutdown my system

My OS 9.04 is up to date. After an upgrade only this has happened.

When I search a mail content or subject whatever with all accounts
fields enabled the search runs endlessly and even can not stop it by
pressing stop button in the tool bar always I have to restart the
programme.
