Current kernel gives ALSA 1.0.21, no cracking sound.

postscriptum... then add 28 attachements to it. What's the point of
sending more than 1 e-mail ?

After trying to sleep (it doesn'work, so I need to reboot the computer:

Run a vanilla Karmic install, log in, enable desktop effects.
Boot with Lucid, log in with the same home user, enable desktop effects
