Apologies for the delay in responding. Unfortunately, having cured this
problem by using my Gutsy xorg.conf I no longer have the original and I
am not in a position to attempt to reinstall Hardy. However, I have
recently hit a similar problem with Intrepid on the same machine.

indication why. Eventually I tried upgrading from the alternate CD.
First try allowing additional internet upgrade also failed silently so I
requested a local upgrade
