Hmmm, why did you change this to compiz. I said I do not use compiz or
any such 3D window systems.

That much said, when I explicitly turned off 3D support in my graphics
card, this problem went away. Is there something in 10.04 that detects
the 3D capabilities, and tries to turn features on that would interfere
with this window behavior?

I can't install the package linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic, it
gives the following error:

Oh, here is a diff of what I needed to do to get it working. Maybe one
of you will actually be able to understand this:

Is there any way to just turn off load balancing? I'd be eager to
sacrifice a little performance for a large (almost 100%) gain in battery
life.

I've been seeing this bug as well, but I'm on an x86_64 machine using
the current Ubuntu Karmic nVidia drivers. Should I attach an xorg log
here, or open a new bug given the difference in hardware ?

IIRC I think it was a spinlock deadlock detected, but I'm not sure.

I had an SD card inserted into it right before the test. Anyway, I
don't think it matters now, because as you predicted, in Beta 2, it did
work as expected (i.e. both devices mounted), thank you, now I get to
figure out how to close this. :)
