I've tested the new workaround mentioned above. Configs before
workaround:
* AppleVolumes.default:
/shared/timemachine/ "TimeMachine" allow:timemachine cnidscheme:dbd
options:tm,upriv,usedots
afpd.conf:
- -tcp -noddp -uamlist uams_dhx.so,uams_dhx2.so -nosavepassword
-nozeroconf

I can confirm that I have the same issue after upgrading to Oneiric
today . The workaround to use uam_guest.so works but it is not feasible
as I am in a multi user environment and need user permissions on the
shares.
Before dist upgrading I was using a locally compiled 2.2.0-beta4 as I
needed uam_
