Can I confirm Ian Ellis's comments.The 'scratch' part of the problem
only occurs to me running rdesktop that remotes sound to my desktop, eg
warning bell. This appears to confuse everything and I have to reboot

I think that the error message "SoX was compiled without MP3 encoding
support" is misleading. It can convert from mp3 but not to mp3. If I run
the command "sox x.mp3 y.mp3 tempo 1.5" it fails but the command "sox
x.mp3 y.ogg tempo 1.5" works fine. So this issue is just related to
writing mp3 files.

Ran Rhythmbox overnight without incident. So going directly to Alsa
seems to have resolved the problem. It obviously causes other problems
though.
I am running Skype which goes directly to Alsa as well. I don't know
whether that is relevant, it should just block when pulse is active.

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor
When the display first paints, the blue up arrow and purple down arrow
are corrupt (see screen shot). Maximizing the window then returning it
to its initial size via the window decorations fixes the problem.

the log shows CPU#0 stuck and sometimes it doesn't. It's done this with
the stock nvidia-glx-177 drivers from Ubuntu, and drivers 180.08 and
180.11 installed from nvidia. I'm not using compiz, just the standard

I've had a problem for a long time (months... back from pre-Intrepid
alphas). Toshiba M200 tablet. Symptoms are very similar to Michael's. I
normally use Dvorak. This happens very consistently with several
different USB keyboards I've tried, different manufacturers:

I still get an xorg crash every single boot. Second startup always works
fine.
Here's the last few lines of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old (the log written by
the crashed server, I presume):

Toshiba Portege M200 tablet. Consistent problem (past several months,
through several kernel upgrades). Hibernation normally works fine (if a
little slow). But if I pull out the USB keyboard after it has started
dumping memory, it consistently dies with stuff like this:

Yeah, sorry I've delayed so long in reporting this. Will try to
duplicate here; that should also tell if it's because of the built-in
hub in the other keyboard.
