A number of interesting things have happened. First, as requested, I
ran xrestop. This revealed a number of tasks under that kept
increasing in number, as predicted. To try and figure out what was
creating these, I rebooted and only opened the terminal with xrestop.

suspending ad resumeing about 5 times and everything seems normal. I am not
sure which update over the past day or so fixed the problem but so far so good.

I have tried simply removing Xubuntu but, at boot-time, I'm told
"Couldn't find file" (or words to that effect) and was left at a
flashing cursor with no idea as to how to proceed.
A little help would be HUGELY appreciated!

I had the same problem with the latest kernel update breaking my click
pad in lucid. I went back to the -32 kernel and the click pad still
works under that kernel. I have the hp touchsmart tm2t-1000. If you
have access to the older kernel you might give it a try.

not work for me. Left click using single tap, Righ click using two finger
tap, Left click portion of clickpad, Right click portion of clickpad area

I have also the same problem. OS is Ubuntu 10.04.3
Network manager needs to be completly removed for WOL to work. As I also have
wlan on my laptop, this is not an option.
If network manager is not started during startup, and eth0 is configured
manually, WoL also works, but wlan is affected.

You could just put a transparent overlay that covers the gap between the
dock and the stack. That way, the mouse wouldn't hover over anything on
its way to whatever you want to click on.
