This no longer happens for me after doing a clean install of 16.04. I'm
running kernel version 4.4.0-18, with a Broadwell i5-5200U CPU.

After a few days of this, added the xorg-edgers PPA, upgraded to the
newer packages, and I haven't had a single X server crash since. I also
installed the 4.4.0-040400rc4-generic kernel available here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-rc4-wily/ but I'm not
sure if that's required
Upgrading the package to 1.9.10-1ubuntu1 fixed the Gnome background
selection screen for me, but I too am still getting blank gradients in
GIMP. This bug is also affecting the Chromium browser fairly badly, so
it's not an isolated problem.

Just a little extra info: from my searching around on the issue, it
would appear that the remaining errors could well be down to incorrect
usage of the Cairo API, rather than a bug per se. From the 1.9.10
release notes:
The last snapshot was picked up by the bleeding edge distributions and so the
