Update: it just happened when I just switched off the external screen
for a while. When I switched it on again, it blinked and then went
black. Plugging it out and then in again solved it (this time)

I have exactly the same problem, with the same soundcard, on a Mac Pro
Desktop.
I think once I heard some faint sounds over my Headphone connected to
the front 3.5mm socket, but that was all.
Didnt file a seperate bug, as it seems a Mac-related problem and I have
the same soundcard.

I remember I had a similar problem with my Lenovo R60 when I installed
Lucid the first time. I think a command such as "reconfigure alsa" or so
solved it, but i cant remember the command.
