This most certainly is not an AP issue!
Breezy Badger works perfectly smoothly, dist-upgrade to Dapper broke everything
in the aforementioned way!
(..Operation not supported..)
with ipw2100-1.1.4 .
I'll give re-installing a fresh kernel a try and then building ipw2100
from source.

..forgot to mention, that this is on a WPA-PSK encrypted network, which
has been working with the identical config files for a while now ;-)
