I've found a workaround (you probably know but just incase), completely
remove the top panel where the applets are, reboot (or restart desktop
environment), make a new panel and add everything back on it again
To make the internal microphone load in at startup, add the amixer line
(amixer set 'Input Source' 'Int DMic') to startup applications
(System>Preferences>Startup Applications). I've found this has solved
the problem.

An alternative way of doing it would be to use the rt2800pci module and
add a script to unload it on shutdown. I've found that the rt2800pci
module works better, but sometimes causes the system to freeze when
shutting it down, but I added a script in /etc/init.d, and linked it (ln
-s) into /etc/rc0

This probably down to the fact that the Xubuntu Settings Manager sets
xfconf values, whereas chromium uses gconf settings, which of course may
not even be present in Xubuntu since it is not gnome-based.

Found a workaround for this bug when using gradients, that you have to
apply to each fontwork object in turn:
[1] Make a fontwork object and set fill to gradient
[2] On the object:
Right-click>Area...>Area>Untick 'Automatic' under 'Increments.

Ah, after testing this further the problem was really a corrupted
config. Running rm -r ~/.config/vlc seemed to fix this problem for all
versions of vlc.
