I have since discovered that that the problem is with the Nvidia driver.
The "nv" driver works fine. The problem is still present on image
2.6.15-29-k7

I am not sure if I got included in the six people effected by this noted
at top but I wanted to install netgear n600 wifi dual band USB adapter
and it did not seem to kick off correctly. I noticed via searches that
others suggested installing ndiswrapper

On my system the closest match was .openoffice.org. Currently I only
have Openoffice 3.2 Writer installed.
I did the command rm -r ~/.openoffice.org but no change was noted.
While doing some testing I did observe that after toggling the zoom
dialog up/down arrow the dialog box conten
The up/down arrow is the shade/unshade function - sorry for any confusion. I
have repeated
the steps you gave and behaviour is unchanged.
Toggling the shade/unshade function for the zoom dialog fixes it but this has
to be done
every time it is used. Thanks

This is with Xubuntu 10.04 on my deskop PC. If the zoom window is
manually made much bigger the controls appear. I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my
laptop but in that case there is no problem with the OpenOffice Writer
zoom window.
