I just installed kernel linux-image-2.6.20-2-generic, version

I did boot without those options, the lines I already mentioned were the
only relevant ones I noticed. I could take a picture if you want to, but
the only thing different from a normal, working bootup was the "BUG:
Soft lockup on CPU#0" line.
Is there some SysRq trick I could do that would help?
If you need the screenshot, it's at
http://nullinfinity.org/tmp/lockup.jpg . This time the "BUG" line
appeared a little earlier. Googling suggests that this problem is often
caused by wireless drivers (in my case, bcm43xx), which would explain
why it occurs just after NetworkManager does its thing.
It's definitely bcm43xx that's causing the problem. Blacklisting the
module allows me to boot normally. If I then modprobe it, the computer
locks up within a second or so.

When you say "cursor", you mean the mouse pointer, right?
If so, this is indeed a bug in the fglrx driver. For me, this bug only

With DRI correctly set up, I don't see this junk below the mouse
pointer.

I've noticed that this bug occurs both with the proprietary wl driver
