linux-image-2.6.20-4-generic fixes the lockup. Thanks! That kernel's
postinst script is buggy though, but that's a different issue...

I downloaded linux-source-2.6.20, patched the kernel with
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=9885&action=view (for working fans)
and
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=10022&action=view (for
working fans after resume)
and rebuilt the kernel.
The result was that pre-suspend,
Sure. it's from comment #69 in
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7122 . I've done some more
testing and that patch doesn't seem to help anyway. To sum up, the
situation is this:
With Ubuntu kernels 2.6.17 and earlier:
* Before suspend, the fans come on as they should
* Suspend to both ram
With the 2.6.20 kernels now in Feisty, bcm43xx reports signal levels

I've tried various patches over the last week or so and at first didn't
have much success with any combination but I'm now running 2.6.20-rc5
with the patches from http://www.sisk.pl/kernel/patches/2.6.20-rc5/ and
I have working fans both before and after resume. For context, see

Binary package hint: compiz
I saw compiz 0.3.6 just appeared in the Feisty repository so I upgraded,

Binary package hint: tracker
Tracker was recently added to Feisty and I noticed that it does not
index audio/video metadata. I talked to Jamie McCracken (main Tracker
developer) and extraction works fine for him on Edgy, so it appears that
the problem is confined to Feisty. C

The 2.17.90 version of g-p-m is very unstable for me. Often, ACPI events
such as unplugging the AC cause g-p-m to crash. Trying "gnome-power-
