I'm still confused and unable to get this working any better than I previously
mentioned. To begin with, I don't have a Surround setting in
gnome-volume-control, only Master and PCM (for the default HDA Intel device).
This is with the latest Hardy kernel 2.6.24-7-generic.

To answer my own question: adding "options hda_intel_snd model=3stack"
allows me to get sound from the right headphone jack. The other
headphone jack and the speakers are still silent. This is still with the
1.0.16 driver I installed.

Harvey, I downloaded and installed alsa-driver 1.0.16, but that didn't
help (also on an Inspiron 1420 here). Did you do anything else to get
your sound working. Pass options when you load the module, or anything
like that?
I'll try with the rc2 tarball, maybe they accidentally brought back the

I recently installed Hardy Alpha 4 on my Inspiron 1420 Intel Dual Core

Hardy kernel contains the new b43 driver, which does not have this

I see now that the absence of /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq is a
red herring - that's not there on the first boot either, when the
frequency on the second core does scale correctly. I'll look into this
some more...
