the installation starts, it gives an error about apt and is aborted.

Never mind. I managed to install it on second try. I used an old
pendrive that had 16.10, and it probably hadn't been overwritten.
I erased the pendrive, copied the 17.04 installer again, and it worked
fine.

This is exactly bug #614176, but it's supposed to be fixed, and it's
not. It's happening in my Acer Travelmate 290 just upgraded to maverick.
Suspend to disk and resume act as a workaround.
My best choice for a kernel is still 2.6.33-02063305, the PPA from

Yes, it does! I thought that the fix had already been merged into the
final release.
The next kernel update will have the fix, I hope. In the meantime, the
system keeps telling me I have three updates for the kernel, that I will
have to ignore.

I have tested the proposed patch, and it works. I have even commented
out the
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-laptop
line, and it still works.
I don't see how I can change the verification-needed tag, though. Can

On a previous run, I uninstalled and reinstalled update-manager, since
it was complaining about it. But then the crash was worse, and more
subtle: the system went into a state where it was running 22.04 but the
sources.list file had been adapted for 24.04, so the whole package
system was messed up,
