Yes, this works.
I really had edited the line for /dev/hda by hand, because I formatted
the partition with a new fs and the old UUID did not work any more.
I do not know whether, by throwing away the UUID, I did anything "evil"
in the sense of Ubuntu, anything I should not do.

the boot process with a rescue shell, saying that fsck did not succeed.
Strangely, my root partition /dev/hda2 is mounted as
This only happens when I select the checkbox that tells xfce to save the
session for future logins.
When I leave this box unchecked, the machine is immediately shutdown, as
it should be.
