As a baseline, the 3.8 kernel works normally, with text displays on all
six vts. Both the 3.9 and 3.10 kernel's fail in different ways and to
different degrees.

- does not work first boot (poweroff or reboot)
- works (if power drained, battery removed)
- no console display (vts 1-6)
- reboot
I can't say that 3.9 really exhibits the bug. It no longer has text on
the VTs (which is it's own bug), but can be coaxed into providing an X
display if the right steps are followed. That's not to say that it's
smooth or the desired behavior, but it *can* provide an X display.
Whereas, 3.10 can n
3.9-rc1 exhibits the same behavior as 3.9. That is, it can provide an X
display if coaxed and provides no text output on any of the VTs.

Have you tried swtiching to other virtual terminals? I believe I was
experiencing the same issue, only to find that the display was stuck on
vt7 for some reason, but there were in fact logins waiting on vts 1-6.
Adding "text" to the kernel command line seems to mitigate this issue in

Periodically, I find that I am unable to open the spice display to one
of my virtual machines using the spicec cli (see below). When this
happens I am still able to access the display using virt-manager.

It's not the VM (aka guest) that has the dual overlapping display, but
rather the host machine. If the host's displays are overlapping or not
a perfect 1:1 mirror, the error is returned when trying to view a

To be clear, this issue is present with any bluetooth connected evdev
input (keyboard or mouse) that is not disconnected prior to a suspend
resume cycle.

Yes, your configuration matches mine (disks are all LVM, with no
separate non-LVM /boot). Also, your work around is much the same
approach I took, though I did also migrate to a GPT partition table in
the process.

Is it not possible to create two builds of the package? One with cycles
enabled for i386/amd64 and one without cycles for all platforms (or
optionally for everything other than i386/amd64). It's a shame to see
12.10 getting released without cycles.

As maxb@ states LVM is useful on the desktop/laptop just as much as on
the server. In fact I won't install a system without it. Full disk
encryption also uses it. I'd hazard to say that's going to become more
and more prevalent.

After upgrading to 12.10 I found that I could no longer boot my system.
Instead I ended at a grub rescue prompt. Attempting to fix this by
booting from a USB stick built from the 12.04 alternative installer
revealed that grub could no longer embed the necessary core.img file.
Any chance of getting this patch ingested?
