IM state still to the side of standard applet when on a vertical panel

Bug #282264 reported by Andrew Aylett on 2008-10-12
I have installed the new fast-user-switch-applet (with integrated shutdown and
IM functionality), but the IM status icon is displayed to the right of the
pre-existing text-or-icon, even though I've got a vertical panel.

On my system, console-kit-daemon with all its threads takes about 2MB of
RAM (RSS in ps aux).
This has near *zero* impact
There are two bugs:
One in power-funcs.sh :
if [ "$?" -eq 0 ]; then
STATE="AC";
elif [ "$?" -eq 1 ]; then
This is wrong because the first test [ "$?" -eq 0 ] will change $? .
We need to save $? to another variable before testing it. The attached patch
does that.

The other on in 90-hdparm.sh :
if [ $STATE = "BATTERY" ] ; then
causes a syntax error when $STATE is empty (it is empty when on_ac_power
didn't return either 0 or 1). We need to quote $STATE. The attached
patch does that.

acpi-support 0.109-0hardy2 fixes this for me.
Tests conducted:
1) on_ac_power returns 255
=> apm 254
2) on_ac_power returns 0
=> apm 254
3) on_ac_power returns 1
=> apm 128

Public bug reported:
This is on Intrepid(+proposed) with compiz.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Start gnome-terminal (seems to work with any application)
2) Click *into* it (not the titlebar or the borders)
3) Press the "Shut down the computer" button on your panel (or select it from
some menu)
4) See t

This also happens for the "Log Out of the session" window btw.
If you can't easily spot the problematic setting it's probably not worth
investigation further and i will reset compiz to default... (delete the
compiz tree in gconf-editor?)

This problem is known, confirmed and being worked on.
The bug is still open on pm-utils for this reason.

Just kicked the /apps/comiz and /apps/compizconfig tree on a text
console (while not logged in in X).
Surprisingly, this didn't help (it did reset all the compiz settings).

Without compiz it doesn't happen. The window spawns in the foreground,
though it sometimes doesn't get the focus.
Blowing aways /apps/metacity , /apps/compiz , /apps/compizconfig at the
same time seems to have solved it. (compiz must be reading some metacity
settings?)
Now that it's "solved" for
