I have the same problem. The problem is in kernel 4.13 (4.13.0-26 to be
exact), since it has appeared as I've installed HWE update. I've tried
rebooting with kernel 4.10 and this problem was gone. I've collected the
data via ubuntu-bug (was unable to collect it via apport-collect for
some reason).

Lenovo G570, with the same broadcom card. Upgrade to 13.04 made my
system unbootable. Had to use former kernel (3.5) in order to boot.

And, old version of bcmwl driver breaks networking on 3.8. So, owners of
affected cards on Ubuntu 13.04 have two options: do not use this driver
at all (and have no wi-fi) or to use one of the older kernels,

This also happens to me on Ubuntu 12.10 32bit. For no reason sometimes
trackpoint does not work since boot. Trackpoint buttons do not work
also. Notebook is the same Lenovo Thinkpad X121e, AMD E-300.

The same problem on Radeon HD6310 (E-300 APU) on Lenovo Thinkpad X121e.
Using Ubuntu 12.10. Display is off since the point after grub.
vt_handoff workaround did help. However, display still turns off, but
then returns in less than a second, so that I can see plymouth.
