Really strange. I always thought it's sufficient to purge a package to
get rid of all gconf data but I needed to restart GDM for a clean gconf.
Ok, I tested the trivial fix (as already said I just check if
default_logfiles[i] exist with fopen) and it seems to work.

in the log list (grayed out to visualize their absence) so the user can

The only thing we know: a five (probably less) seconds delay stops the
hangs.
So I removed everything [up to "Loading hardware drivers..."] before the
module gets loaded during a successful delayed boot by either
blacklisting it, removing the driver, disabling it in the kernel, and
adding "acpi=of

Pls reread. When running on batteries I get 600 load cycles per hour,

I attached a video clip of one the machines boot process (altered the
usplash theme to make it more clear).
Two different Intrepid machines (one doesn't support kvm) and one hardy
laptop - they all show this behavior. /etc/init.d/checkroot
I too had this problem until setting the framebuffer resolution to the
resolution set in /etc/usplash.conf [4:3].
I had created a test theme where the shown color wasn't even in the
palette, so I guess it has nothing to do with the theme.

Attached a patch that fixes two things:
1.) If the filter is used, the selection paths refer to the child tree model
(three lines that fix this bug...), and
2.) Replaced the range selection thingy with an index list since multiple
selection != range selection.
