I've tested this and can confirm the fix. I did the following:
* Booted a Hardy Live CD (in vbox), installed and launched oem-config
and confirmed that I could close it in mid-pre-install causing badness
* Enabled proposed, updated oem-config (and ubiquity for good measure)
* Launched sudo oe
Tested with mixed results. I did the following:
* Booted a Hardy Live CD (in vbox), installed and launched oem-config
* Selected London from the tz map -- BUT I was offered a UK keyboard,
so I cannot confirm the original problem
* Enabled proposed, updated oem-config (and ubiquity for good me
I can confirm that the document opens fine for me too (though I could
not confirm the breakage on a clean Hardy install)

[Upstream] [hardy] OpenOffice does not save background image of slide master
https://bugs.launc
Setting back to incomplete as we clearly don't have a handle on the
cause. I've tested and cannot confirm the problem either on a clean
install or an update to proposed.
Chris, any debugging info you can think of that would be useful? Would
Apport catch this? (does a binary in fact crash?) If so,
I can confirm the problem on a fresh Hardy install and can confir that
it's fixed with -proposed installed.
