/usr/share/xresprobe/xorg.conf, and the other from the installation,
namely /media/disk/etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Interesting! Am travelling on holiday, so will only try it out after I
get back in about 8 days' time. For future reference in case it helps
others: I certainly did not install a via driver, the problem kicked
in during the first installation---there is something else that

I am having a somewhat similar experience in Lucid. This is on a laptop
with non-standard and not fully known hardware, 7 years old and sold in
South Africa under a name I couldn't find elsewhere (euroTeK).
What happens is that kde installs, but login fails in exactly the same
way as described her
I have the same problem (old laptop, have had video issues before with
ubuntu), but more seriously: I cannot get video to play at all! Not
totem, not vlc, not mplayer. Haven't tried joenix's gst-launch method,
will report back when I try laptop again. All other visuals/graphics
