It has been an issue for as long as I remember using Ubuntu.
The solution is simple, don't have a turned off printer plugged into the
parallel port.
I guess I can live with that, but it can be extremely annoying if you don't
know why your scanner isn't detected.

Ok, fixed my problem.
I run strace xsane and found out that it was pausing while opening
/dev/parport0. I just turned on my printer (that just happens to be
connected to the parallel port) and tried again. Yo and behold, it
worked. :-)

Same here, xsane hangs for a long time on startup (about 2 minutes),
then it finally opens.
My scanner is an Epson GT-9600 and it was working great a while ago, so
I guess some recent update broke it :-(

The problem is that udev expects the scanner vendor to be "Epson" but
the scanner reports "EPSON".
I attached a patch to fix this.

I've determined the cause of this bug in my case: I have a small /boot
partition outside of the root filesystem (btrfs).
Turns out that that boot partition was not added to the /etc/fstab, so all the
kernel upgrading and upgrade-grub operations I was doing were in fact affecting
the /boot direct
