user-nfs-server was previously running and nfs port was hold by stale
connection from the client (socket was in TIME_WAIT state).
After waiting for a while (so TIME_WAIT socket is released) re-installation of
unfs3 was succesfull.

And syntax highlighting actually works - it is just preferences not
available for it.

Yep, highlight is on and working.
It is a missing preferences page for changing highlight options
(Preferences -> Syntax Highlighting Preferences in the gedit's help)

None of following works:
- mouse selection copy to paste buffer;
- Ctrl-Shift-c;
- Menu-Copy (always disabled);
In contrast Menu->Edit-Paste and middle-button-click on mouse copies
buffer from other applications with no problem.
Other applications are fine.
