I'm having the same problem after upgrading from Hardy. I have all the
essential Gnome 2.24 packages installed, and the system up-to-date.
Using the Failsafe session works fine. Maybe the problem is something
from Hardy that's not installed on Intrepid?

I followed Casper guide, and choosing "Gnome" as session, now starts ok.

On Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 i386, all patches applied, I had the same problem using
the Java image libraries.
Using this command
sudo sed -i 's/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g'
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so
it was fixed.

I have the same problem, using Hardy Beta 5, updated to April 1st. Disabling
the keyboard plugin on Gnome Settings Daemon fixes the crashes.
Is there any open bug about Xvnc performance?
