The FS in question is actually formatted in f2fs, just that the
installer shows it as "unformatted" for a reason that I don't get.

Before you object "f2fs isn't supported", I actually managed to install
to a newly formatted f2fs, again showing as "unformatted" in the
installer for a reason I don't get.

Reason of focus loss is different in mantic&later (GNOME 40 series) than
before (GNOME 3 series). For GNOME 40 series, I have temporarily applied
a workaround in my personal configuration to disable the lock screen,
but wouldn't recommend that in a work or school computer.
