For Debian I've just wrote a patch which enables building of an
libphp5-embed package. This patch is published at http://bugs.debian.org
/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=380731 and it applies fine to the latest
Ubuntu. Attaching the patch also here for completeness.

In the latest xulrunner update the bundled copy of sqlite is used
instead of the system-wide copy of sqlite (as xulrunner requires a
version of sqlite which is newer than the version of the system-wide
copy). While this works fine for Firefox it introduces side effects for
third-party applications.
This bug also exists on Fedora.
I've created a patch to workaround this problem, but I need to clean it up a
bit first. I expect to be able to upload this patch later today

mail-notification widget hangs
As promised, here's the patch I've created to work around this problem.
What it does is that whenever the number of unread messages is reduced
to 0, the icon will be destroyed and recreated. This newly created icon
is hidden by default.
