This is most probably not a bug. The installation worked if I removed
some additional commands I had put at the end of the preseed script (
i.e. in the preseed/late_command ).

I close this bug report. It was not a bug.
The problem was that I copied out a /etc/passwd file with false uid/gid values
for the some of the daemons. These values seem to have changed lately.

The problem didn't go away after doing a fresh installation of Ubuntu 18.10.
I have to first disconnect and then connect my Sony MDR-1000x to get the A2DP
profile to work.
