Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnash
The latest Version of Gnash 0.8.3 is not in the repos. This is a problem
because older versions no longer can play youtube or much of the flash
content on the internet.
** Affects: gnash (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New

I understand this work around exists but I fear that the average user
won't know about that and get frustrated with Gnash that is provided in
the regular repos. The more people that don't use Gnash and use Adobe
the harder it will be to convince them to switch or support it in the
future.

I agree Microsoft has too much of the market share and Free Software
should be kicking their butts. I have to correct the bug report a bit
though. One way we could achieve this Free Software bliss is by only
having Free Software in the Ubuntu Base install (by the FSF guidelines).

somone could try this method of resolving it. it worked in Bug 150930
which is similar to this problem.
1) Change the resolution in /etc/usplash.conf to 1024x768
2) Add vga=791 to the kernel line in /etc/boot/menu.lst
3) sudo update-initramfs -u -k `uname -r`
