I am facing something similar. I am already struggling with an issue on this
Tyan S3970 (Ubuntu 12.04.03 fully updated), which I am in the process of
reporting here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1217229
I have a pair of system disks (raid/luks) which I am able to boot.
@Colin.
I am having a couple of other issues on this machine, whose details are located
at the one bug that seems specific to it, which is here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1217229
Perhaps I should keep the system data there, rather than repeating it?
Please let me know.
I am still working on this, but may be struggling in addition, with another
bug. This new bug seems to have been noticed in other contexts, so I have
reported it here:

In basic outline, I can boot my RAID/LUKS pair of disk

the Debian bug tracker early this year, and included the patched file.
It doesn't seem to have gone anywhere as yet.

I am running Ubuntu Gnome 16.04, and the /etc/.pwd.lock file has been on
my machine since install. I checked a couple of 14.04 machines, and
it's the same. That file is making duplicity backups of /etc fail.

Ran "update-manager -d" thinking this was an upgrade to 16.04, but I
guess it's an upgrade to "testing". Result is a window saying:
Could not install 'gconf2'
The upgrade will continue but the 'gconf2' package may not be in a
