No, there is definitely no instance running (checked with ps). Other GNOME apps also recognize the daemon is not running and warn accordingly. I also recognized not only the gnome-settings-daemon fails to start, also gnome-power-manager, the mixer applet or Pidgin segfault with that error in ld-2.9
