* Installed Ubuntu Studio 9.04 on a 20 Gigabyte partition of a Dell Inspiron

- During the install I had a wired LAN connection autoconfigured successfully
- I selected the audio workstation and LDPSI plugins options (ie. 2 out of

System crashed when update-manager called for the first time after fresh
install upon setting up

I FORGOT TO MENTION
* Before I carried out the attempted repair in the last comment I did a reboot
and was still getting the 'very ugly looking desktop - big square buttons'
* After carrying out the repair and doing a reboot I have the normal beautiful
looking buttons buttons and desktop again

* I get the same problem running Kubuntu 9.04 with KDE 4.2.2 and Kmail
version 1.11.2.
* I realised that it was the mail checking when I switched off Interval Mail

- It is definitely the checking of mail causing a problem for me
- At least switching off interval checking let control

I'm the person that submitted the patch. The last activity on it was
just before Christmas when I submitted a request for feedback on the
merge proposal (as can be seen in the last comment of the merge
proposal). As far as I can remember, I don't think I got any feedback
too unfortunately I go

I've had a look at fixing this bug and put the work on a branch of mine
at https://code.launchpad.net/~declanmg/bzr/264275-fix
I'll look into reorganising the code when I get the chance (am new to
bzr and new to python) and adding some tests. Any feedback/advice would
be great.

implementation. My approach will be:
For any file/directory asked to be added
- Get the osutils.realpath() of its parent directory and ensure that this is
inside [ie. osutils.is_inside()] the osutils.realpath() of the tree.b
I have updated my branch and added a python test (as opposed to bash
script test) to bzrlib/tests/blackbox/test_add_symlink_wip.py however I
get a return code error:
AssertionError: Unexpected return code

I have found that gedit is similarly slow. Hence this is not a meld-
specific issue. Rather it must be a more generic OS bug. Hence marking
as invalid.
